Katie is an 11-year-old girl who has just moved into the neighborhood. Some of the girls on Katie's street want to meet her, but they’re not sure how to “talk” to Katie because she is deaf and uses sign language to communicate.
Luckily, one of the neighborhood girls knows some sign language! One day after school, the girls meet Katie and a conversation about their pets leads to a discussion about wild animals! Katie’s mom Lyndi, who also knows sign language, suggests a trip to the zoo where they can all get to know each other better and learn signs for all of their favorite zoo animals! The result is an unforgettable day filled with new friends, wild animals and sign language learning fun!
As a BONUS, Lyndi gives the viewers a “private sign language lesson” covering the Manual Alphabet, Number Signs 1-20 and a review of the animal signs from the zoo!
REVIEW:
Katie, who is deaf, has just moved into the neighborhood, and Lindsey and her friends can’t wait to learn sign language so they can communicate with her. Katie’s mother, Lyndi, played by American Sign Language interpreter Lyndi Patton-Gura, gives the girls a tutorial, and then invites them all to go to the zoo to practice their animal signs. A bonus section features Patton-Gura reviewing the alphabet and animal signs, as well as introducing signs for numbers 1 to 20 and ages. Patton-Gura is a pleasant, knowledgeable instructor.
